Opal is an upcoming anonymous, harm reduction hotline built specifically for Washington State. We stay on the line so nobody uses alone, pairing immediate overdose prevention with direct warm linkages to local resources and ongoing care.
The Problems
Healthcare and emergency services are built around punitive surveillance and fragmented care, forcing people who use substances to consume in total isolation out of rational fear.
Current overdose response depends entirely on someone else being present. When people use alone, there is no one to call for aid, administer naloxone, or support breathing. In mere minutes, this silence becomes irreversible.
~80% of individuals who use alone repeatedly state they want linkages to wound care, fentanyl test strips, suboxone access, and non-carceral mental wellness—yet these supports are pushed only after a fatal catastrophe occurs.
Navigating cold phone directories and public databases is dehumanizing and fraught with arrest risks. Warm referrals made by operators with lived regional experience turn a momentary check-in into a permanent bridge to wellness.
Our Solutions
We redesign harm reduction through dedicated anonymous voice lines, localized peer pods, and sovereign protocol ladders that guarantee safety without police entanglement.
Callers connect with an anonymous peer operator who stays quietly on speakerphone while the person consumes. No registration, no legal names, just genuine human presence and immediate readiness.
Operators tailor conversational check-in intervals to the exact route of administration and substance type. If unresponsiveness occurs, the operator immediately deploys designated emergency medical services or other support to the provided physical address in a way that keeps the caller safe now and in the future.
Once safely through, the operator doesn't hang up with a cold referral. They facilitate live warm introductions to harm reduction resources in the callers vicinity, all with the caller always in control.
How It Works
A decentralized, peer-staffed triage protocol engineered specifically for Washington State to safeguard individuals before, during, and after substance use while preserving total anonymity.
Caller Matching
- New callers receive an anonymous ID and are assigned to a block of 3–4 operators based on their shared Washington State county and region.
- Returning callers share their anonymous ID, are paired with one of their regular operators, and share their current location.
By maintaining a consistent pod of Washington-based operators per caller, we cultivate lasting trust. Each operator is intimately knowledgeable about localized care and supply networks across Washington counties.
Safeguarding
- Operators provide real-time alerts regarding local drug supply adulterants based on caller location.
- Operators tailor the frequency of check-ins based on route of administration, risk profile, and substance onset timing.
If a caller misses consecutive check-in pings, local EMS is notified of an unresponsive person at the designated address. Operators stay on the line until responders arrive.
Bridging
- After consumption, operators confirm caller safety and initiate warm introductions to harm reduction resources upon consent.
- Community resources—from legal aid to Narcan supplies—are kept continuously up to date via regional provider surveys.
Within 24 to 72 hours following an overdose event, we conduct an opt-in follow-up check-in to confirm wellbeing and coordinate ongoing medical or harm reduction aid.
